Trip Facts

Duration : Days Trek Grade : Grade 1:

Trekking is essentially day hiking and doesn't require any special training. However, good physical condition, a love of walking, and a desire to enjoying the spectacular views of the mountains and encounter village life are essential. We offer a diverse range of easy treks. Categorising a trek as easy means that no difficult climbing or ascents to high altitudes are involved, they take usually no more than a week and are suitable for anyone. Be assured that a loss of altitude in no way means a loss of interesting things to see and experience. While our more challenging treks get you closer to a small number of mountain ranges, lower altitude treks often provide better viewpoints from which to enjoy the colourful horizons of a whole series of ranges. The duration of a trek can be from 4 to 9 days with an average of 4 to 5 hours walking per day.

Overview

The Dudh Kunda Trek

The Dudh Kunda Trek is one of the most enchanting and lesser-known trekking routes in Nepal. Dudh Kunda (Milky white appearance of the water) is a sacred lake located in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal, at an altitude of 4,560 meters. The trek offers trekkers a unique opportunity to explore pristine natural beauty, picturesque landscapes, and the rich cultural heritage of the Sherpa people. The trek gets its name from the sacred Dudh Kunda Lake, a serene turquoise body of water that is believed to have mystical powers. The lake is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and holds deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Hindu Beliefs

  • Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in Dudh Kunda purifies the soul and washes away sins.
  • The locals believe that drinking its water grants spiritual blessings.

Buddhist Beliefs

  • The lake is equally revered by Buddhists, especially the Sherpa and Tamang communities, who see it as a site of spiritual energy.
  • The area is home to Guru Rinpoche’s blessings, and Buddhist monks visit for meditation and rituals.

Why Trek Dudh Kunda?

The Dudh Kunda Trek is perfect for adventurers looking for a less crowded alternative to the more popular trekking routes in Nepal, such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. The trek offers breathtaking views of towering peaks, including Mount Everest, and provides an immersive experience in the natural and cultural richness of the Khumbu region. Along the way, trekkers will encounter diverse flora and fauna, traditional villages, and monasteries that hold centuries-old spiritual significance.

In this article, we will explore the details of the Dudh Kunda Trek, covering the cost, itinerary, the best time to trek, what to expect from the trek, and the rich cultures that you will experience along the way.

Religious Festival at Dudh Kunda Lake

  • The Dudh Kunda Mela (Fair) is held during the Janai Purnima festival, which falls on the full moon of Shrawan (July–August) in the Nepali calendar.
  • During this time, Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from Nepal and India gather to bathe in the lake, perform pujas (prayers), and offer milk to the lake as a religious ritual.
  • The festival is especially significant for Brahmins and Kshatriyas, who change their Janai (sacred thread) on this day.

Dudh Kunda Trek Cost

One of the key considerations for any trek is the cost, and the Dudh Kunda Trek is no exception. The cost of the trek varies based on several factors, the duration, the services provided, and any additional activities.

Here is a breakdown of the typical costs involved in the trek:

  1. Permit Fees:
    • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Since the Dudh Kunda trek falls within the Everest region, trekkers must obtain a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit. Authorities issue this permit for NPR 3,000 (~$25 USD) per person.
    • Dudh Kunda Trek Special Permit: Trekkers also need a Dudh Kunda Trek Special Permit to enter the region. Officials provide this permit for NPR 1,500 (~$13 USD) per person.
  1. Guide and Porter Services:
    • Hiring a guide is recommended for the Dudh Kunda Trek, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain. Guides usually charge around $25-30 per day, while porters may cost an additional $20-25 per day.
  1. Accommodation and Meals:
    • Most tea houses along the trek offer basic lodging and meals. The cost of accommodation ranges from NPR 500-1,000 per night, with meals costing approximately NPR 400-800 per day.
  1. Transportation:
    • Flights from Kathmandu to Phaplu (the starting point of the trek) cost around $100-150 per person for a round trip. Bus travel, which is an alternative, can be cheaper but is much less comfortable and takes longer.
  1. Miscellaneous:
    • Costs for Wi-Fi, charging, and hot showers, tips for guides and porters, should be considered. These can add an additional $100-200 to the overall trek cost.

Overall, a budget of around $900 to $1500 for a moderate 12-day trek would be a reasonable estimate.

  1. Spring (March to May):
