These treks are suitable for any walker looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. They are a combination of some longer and shorter walks and hill-walking experience is desirable. The duration is usually from 10 to 15 days. Following the up and down terrain of Nepal and walking to higher elevations contrasts these treks to those in the easy classification. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular close-up views of glaciers and of the high Himalayas. Although the terrain is not difficult, some vigorous hiking experience is useful. There may be up to 6 hours a day on the trail and the elevation rises and falls from 800m/ 2624ft to 4000m/13210ft above sea level.

The 5-day Annapurna Base Camp short trek journey begins through some of the most beautiful scenery. The trail takes you past waterfalls, glaciers, and green forests of Rhododendron and oak. Along the ABC way, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take photos and enjoy the views. The trek is challenging but rewarding, and the experience you’ll never forget.

The 5-day Annapurna base camp trek itinerary from Pokhara follows the river called Modi River passes through the beautiful villages of Jhinu Dada (hot Spring), Chhomrong and the last settlement of Sinuwa village (in those villages we can observe the culture and traditional way of life of the Gurung and Magar people), after Sinuwa village trekkers rich in the place called Bamboo, Dovan, Himalayan, Deurali, MBC(Machhapuchre Base Camp) and Abc (Annapurna Base Camp) which are all under the special management zone of Annapurna Conservation Area.

Adventure, Nature, and Cultural Delights

This 5 day Annapuran Base Camp short Trek is full of adventure, natural beauty, villages, and cultures. The great view of the mountains like Annapurna South (7,219m), Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) (6,997m), Gangapurna (7,455m), Mardi Himal (5553m), Bharha Chuli (7646m), and Annapurna I (8,091m) can be captured. The short ABC Trek mostly follows the green forest.  From Deaurali to ABC via MBC, we follow the Modi Khola, which flows from Annapurna Glaciers and Annapurna I, 8091m.

You can arrange an ABC trek in all four seasons, with March (Spring)to June and September to December (Autumn) being the best times of the year. This 5-day short trek begins and ends in Pokhara. If you have more time, you can extend your hike from Ghorepani Poon Hill to the ABC trek for 10 days.

Our 5-day Annapurna Base Camp trek begins from Pokhara. Our guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Jhinu Danda in a local jeep. Along the drive, you’ll enjoy views of lush green hills and the shimmering silver peaks of the Annapurna range.

Before reaching Jhinu Danda, you’ll cross a scenic suspension bridge over a tributary of the Modi Khola, a picturesque moment to mark the beginning of your adventure. Upon arrival in Jhinu, we’ll pause for lunch before ascending the steep trail toward Chhomrong.

Jhinu Danda is also a great place to experience the traditional culture of the Gurung and Magar communities, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of the region.

Transportation for the 5-day Annapurna Base Camp short trek

Nepal Wilderness Trekking provides transport from Pokhara to Jhinu, 1300 m, from where the 5-day ABC short trek will start. We will follow the same driveway towards Pokhara. Nepal wilderness trekking will drop you off at your hotel. Additionally, ABC trek with kids is also doable, people above 60 years, and beginner traveler,s as they get an opportunity to explore the local culture by exploring the best of the Himalayas.

Meals

Most teahouses along the 5-day Annapurna Base Camp short trail offer a variety of meals to cater to trekkers’ needs. The meals are usually simple and hearty and designed to provide the necessary energy for the trek. Typical meals include rice, noodles, pasta, bread, vegetables, lentils, eggs, and sometimes meat (chicken or yak) dishes. You can also find a range of beverages, including tea, coffee, and soft drinks.

Since the remote location can limit ingredient availability, the menu options might not be as extensive as in urban areas. However, the teahouses are accustomed to serving trekkers and do their best to provide satisfying meals.

Accommodations

5-day Annapurna Base Camp: South vs North Trekking Experiences

There are two prominent Annapurna base camps, each offering a unique trekking experience. The Annapurna South Base Camp is the most popular and frequently visited one. It features a well-established trekking route with numerous amenities for trekkers, including a guesthouse and a teahouse. The trail offers stunning views of the Annapurna massif and is a favorite among trekkers due to its accessibility and beautiful scenery.

In contrast, the Annapurna North Base Camp is located on the other side of the massif and is less frequented by tourists. The trek to the North Base Camp is more challenging and remote, providing a more secluded and adventurous experience. Trekkers can explore less-traveled paths and enjoy the pristine beauty of the region, away from the crowds typically found on the southern side. For the same timeframe, trek one can also choose 5 day Langtang valley trek, and Mardi Himal Trek that can also be connected to ABC.


Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Pokhara (900m) to Samrong and Trek to Sinuwa (2,340m)

Drive Duration: ~3 hours (Pokhara to Samrong)

Trek Distance: ~6 km

Walking Duration: 4 hours

After breakfast in Pokhara, we begin the journey with a drive from Pokhara to Samrong near Jhinu Danda via a shared jeep. The road winds through scenic landscapes, offering views of lush green hills and glimpses of snow-capped peaks.

From Samrong, the trek begins with a climb toward Chhomrong village (2,170m), where we cross a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola River. Chhomrong is known for its scenic terraces and serves as a key stop on the Annapurna Base Camp route. After lunch in Chhomrong, we continue with a steep ascent along a stone staircase toward Sinuwa.

At Sinuwa, enjoy the tranquil surroundings of this small village, with beautiful views of the Annapurna range and glimpses of Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail). Spend the night at a teahouse, enjoying local hospitality and preparing for the next day's trek.

Day 02: Sinuwa to Himalaya (2,900m)

Trek Distance: ~11 km

Walking Duration: 5-6 hours

After breakfast at Sinuwa, we continue with a gradual descent to the village of Bamboo (2,310m), which is surrounded by dense bamboo groves and rhododendron forests. The trail offers a peaceful atmosphere, with occasional sightings of local wildlife such as monkeys and exotic birds.

From Bamboo, we hike uphill through a forested trail toward Dovan (2,600m), passing waterfalls and streams. The trek becomes slightly more challenging as we ascend along the Modi Khola Valley toward the Himalaya. The thinning air is noticeable as we reach the village, where we spend the night at a teahouse.

Himalaya village offers spectacular views of Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail), especially at sunset, and provides a quiet place to rest before the ascent to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC).

Day 03: Himalaya to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m)

Trek Distance: ~10 km     

Walking Duration: 6-7 hours

Today's trek is one of the most scenic and challenging sections. The trail gradually ascends to Deurali and continues through avalanche-prone zones, so we tread cautiously. We stop at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) (3,700m) for lunch, where the view opens up to towering peaks like Annapurna III, Himchuli, and Gandharva Chuli.

After lunch, the final stretch to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) involves a steady 1.5-hour uphill climb. ABC sits at 4,130m, surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Annapurna region, including Annapurna I (8,091m). The panorama from the base camp is breathtaking, with views of Ganga Purna, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Tent Peak.

Spend the night at ABC, enjoying the clear night sky and preparing for a sunrise view the next day.

Day 04: Annapurna Base Camp to Sinuwa (2,340m)

Trek Distance: ~17 km        

Walking Duration: 6-7 hours

We wake up early to witness the sunrise over the Annapurna Range, a mesmerising sight as the peaks turn golden with the first light. After breakfast, we begin our descent, retracing the trail through MBC and Deurali toward Bamboo.

The return journey involves walking through rhododendron forests, waterfalls, and scenic valley views, offering a fresh perspective on the landscape. By late afternoon, we reach Lower Sinuwa, where we’ll spend the night. This peaceful village provides a well-earned rest before the final day of the trek.

Day 05: Sinuwa to Jhinu Danda (1,780m) and Drive Back to Pokhara (900m)

Trek Distance: ~12 km     

Walking Duration: 4-5 hours     

Drive Duration: ~3 hours (Jhinu Danda to Pokhara)

After breakfast, we descend to Chhomrong via the stone staircase and make our way toward Jhinu Danda, passing through lush terraces and forests. After lunch at Jhinu, we trek down to Sewai, where a jeep or bus will be waiting to take us back to Pokhara. The journey back offers a final chance to reflect on the unforgettable experience of trekking to Annapurna Base Camp.
