The 3 days trek of Poon Hill typically begins from Nayapul, which is a small town about 1.5 hours of drive from Pokhara. From there, trekkers pass through lush forests, charming villages, and terraced farmland before reaching Poon Hill summit, the 3 days trek highest point is at 3,210 meters (10,531 feet). However, the average elevation along the trek ranges between 2,500 and 3,000 meters (8,200-9,800 feet), making it relatively easy and accessible for most people. Origin of Poon Hill

Mr. Tek Bahadur Pun, a former major in the Indian Army, founded the Poon Hill Viewpoint. Originally known as Lung Tung Danda, the area underwent renaming to Poon Hill about 45 years ago. This change honors the area’s history as a cattle ranch used by the Pun people, an indigenous group of Nepal. Major Tek Bahadur Pun chose the name “Poon Hill” to pay homage to the heritage of the Pun community and their deep connection to the land. This renaming also highlights the significant role of tourism in the region’s economy.

The name “Ghorepani” comes from the local language, with ‘Ghore’ meaning ‘Horse’ and ‘Pani’ meaning ‘Water’. This name reflects the area’s history as a rest stop for ancient traders, where water was readily available for their horses. Similarly, “Poon Hill” is named after the nearby hill known as Poon, thus the designation “Poon Hill.”

Flora of Poon Hill:

The lower regions of Ghorepani are characterized by subtropical vegetation, including lush forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine trees. As you ascend higher, the landscape transitions into temperate forests dominated by fir, hemlock, and maple trees. Whereas Oak trees dominate the forests around Ghorepani, providing a habitat for various wildlife. One of the highlights is the vibrant display of rhododendron blooms during the spring season, adding a splash of color to the landscape with red, pink, and white. Trekking in the Poon Hill area during the rhododendron bloom is an unforgettable experience. You can enjoy stunning views of snow-capped mountains framed by these colorful flowers. Many trekkers visit specifically to witness this breathtaking natural phenomenon, making it one of Nepal’s most awe-inspiring sights. Additionally, Bamboo is common in the lower elevations. Moreover, Juniper trees thrive at higher elevations. Similarly, paper trees are grown and people use them for making handmade paper products such as stationery, greeting cards, and various craft items.

Fauna:

The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Commonly spotted species include Himalayan Tahr, a large mountain goat, that commonly roams the Annapurna region, including around Ghorepani. The Musk Deer, a shy and elusive animal, inhabits the region’s forests and is renowned for its musk glands, which are used in preparing traditional medicine. The Snow Leopard and Himalayan black bears, a rare and elusive predator, are found at the higher elevations of the Annapurna region, including around Ghorepani. The Red Panda, a small arboreal mammal, resides in the region’s, recognized for its distinctive red fur. Birdwatchers can delight in observing species such as the colorful Himalayan Monal a national bird of Nepal and numerous other migratory and resident bird species.
